Crisis Update -- Sunday August 8th, 2010

Nelson is a real survivor! He doesn't like the bandages we are required to keep on him. The bandages keep the many wounds moist. The vet said the leg might be saved if we keep it moist. So moist it is! Little Nelson will just have to put up with us for now. He fights us so hard when we bandage and clean the wounds. It takes all his strength away. He tosses and turns, trying to escape us. It really breaks my heart. He is such a gentle creature. I hate to see him uncomfortable. We finally decided to just put the antibacterial ointment on the wounds and wrap his entire little body in white towels. Thanks to a wonderful donor, we have several on hand! The towel idea works well. Nelson is finally resting comfortably! He didn't fight once he was wrapped in the towel. He just layed in my arms and went to sleep. He is still very weak. We have been able to get food into him but not nearly enough. We check in with the vet tomorrow. At that time, we should learn Nelsons fate. We hope an amputation will not be necessary. We also hope he will be strong enough so we can put the Revolution on him to kill those maggots! Thanks so much to all of you who have generously donated to his medical fund! We certainly do appreciate your help to save this little guy! It has been a very long day for Nelson and for all of us. We will keep you up to date on his condition.

Animal In Crisis -- Saturday August 7th, 2010

On the way to the Sanctuary a few nights ago, one of the volunteers screamed STOP! I slammed on the brakes. "There is a cat on the side of the road and he's hurt!" she announced. Sure enough, this poor helpless cat lay on the the side of the road. It tried to run as we approached but it could only drag itself on two legs. It was soon caught and we wrapped it in a towel. It is a young, male cat. The vet says he was probably hit by a car a while back; it's lucky we saw the little guy and stopped, as he is very weak--so weak the vet can't even give him pain medicine yet. We are feeding him with a syringe and treating his woulds with antibacterial ointment and giving him antibiotics. We think he will survive but may need surgery. We just hope his foot will not have to be amputated. You can see the little bones of his foot. He has a very long open wound on the side and at the neck exposing his muscles. There are also several smaller wounds. We were unable to determine when the accident happened but maggots were already swarming all over the wounds. The vet says this is a good thing but it is very hard to watch! The Revolution we apply will get rid of them. We just can't use it until he is stronger. We have decided to name him Nelson. He is white with beautiful gray markings and so sweet! The vet estimates his age to be only about four months. He is so restless when he is awake, we have been unable to get a good photo. Next time he sleeps, we will try to get a photo and post it on the site. We are going to need help paying for the medical treatment and/or surgery for this little guy so please spread the word! No amount is too small. Nelson deserves a chance to live!

Arsenic Contamination -- Friday March 5th, 2010

Update on our arsenic contaminated water situation. We are having a private laboratory sample our well. Thanks to Laura we were able to locate a competent company. This is in addition to the Florida Environmental Protection Agency (FLEPA) testing. The dual water filtering system was installed. Our testing shows it is working. However, we will need to test regularly as filters don't last forever. Since this is new, we don't know how long they will actually last. We are having our own testing done because this is just too important to leave to chance. I am happy to report the animals are doing much better now that the water they are drinking is not laced with arsenic. Thank you all for your support during this difficult time!
